AlbanyTri packet pickup & registration
Registered athletes can pick up your race packet TODAY (Sat 9/30) at Roadrunner Sports in Berkeley between 2-5pm. Race day packet pickup will be available, but picking it up on Sat will ease congestion on Sunday and is strongly recommended.
Online registration is closed but walk-in registration is still available at packet pickup and on race day while space is available (~40 open slots). Cash or checks only please.
Bracelets: Two bracelets are included in your race packet marked with your participant number and your heat number. Put one bracelet on your right wrist and the other one on the top tube of your bike. Your wrist band is your ticket to get a timing chip on race day, so be sure to put in on before arriving at the venue.
Heat assignments: Review the heat assignments today so you know when you will be starting your swim. Arrive at the outdoor pool 5-10 minutes before your heat starts. Enter the pool via the MAIN ENTRANCE, not via the side gate near the basketball courts (to avoid the timing mats). You can warm up in a free lane before your heat starts or in the indoor pool. There are no lane assignments – first come, first served.
Timing chips: You will receive your timing chip at check-in on race day. It will have a number corresponding to your participant number marked on your wrist band. There will be volunteers at check it to put it around your left ankle. The chip is not yours to keep! After you cross the finish line, a volunteer will remove it from your ankle. Don’t leave the course with it or we’ll be charged for it.
Waivers: At packet pick (or race day), you will be asked to sign a waiver. You must do this in order to receive your timing chip. Race team captains can sign as guardians for their minor team members if they have obtained permission from the parents of those minors. There will be a waiver signing table at the venue which you should visit before going to get your chip.
T-shirts: You will receive your t-shirt at packet pickup or on race day at a separate booth located near the finish area, not at the registration table.
Weather: Will be sunny and warm, so be prepared. Water and sport drink will be available, but it’s a good idea to load your bike with a full water bottle so you can drink on the bike course and start the run in good shape. Stay hydrated today and during the event. A visor is advised on the run and a wide-brimmed hat for après race. Air temp on Sat at 10am was 68º but it felt more like the low-mid 80ºs in the full sun.
Wishing everyone a great race on Sunday 10/1!
AlbanyTri 2017 heat assignments & tips
Heat assignments are now available for the Albany Community Tri taking place on Sunday 10/1/17. Please check either one of these listings to determine your heat number and start time before race day:
Update 9/29/17 6:29pm: Heat assignment listings were updated for a few participants.
If you are a member of a relay team, your team captain’s name will be listed along with team name. Team members should coordinate with each other to check in at the venue at the same time. See the relay team section of our FAQ for a description of how the timing chip handoff is supposed to work.
Pick up your race packet in advance at Roadrunner Sports in Berkeley on Sat 9/30 between 2-5pm. Packet pickup will also be available on race day, but picking it up on Sat will ease congestion at the registration table. Registration at packet pickup and on race day will be available (cash or check only), but space is limited.
Your race packet will contain TWO security bracelets marked with your participant number and heat number. Put one on your wrist and one on your bike’s top tube BEFORE arriving at the venue on race day. You’ll need this bracelet to obtain your timing chip at check-in on race day.
Aim to arrive at the Albany Aquatic Center at least 1 hour before your start time, possibly earlier if you are new to the triathlon business. The registration area will open at ~6:45am and will be located in front of the Aquatic Center along Portland Ave.
- If you are in heats 1-3: arrive by 7:00am to check in.
- If you are in heats 4-6: arrive by 7:45am to check in.
- If you are in heats 7-9: arrive by 8:30am to check in.
- If you are in heats 10+: arrive by 9:15am to check in.
- First time triathletes should arrive a little earlier to allow for more prep time and an easier time finding a spot in the correct zone of the transition area.
Super Youth check in will commence at 10:00 AM, with the first super youth heat starting at 11:00 or 11:15am. Transition area for Super Youth will be at the blue bike racks on the pavement next to the Aquatic Center.
Pre-race announcements will take place at 7:35am, repeated at 8:55am. Heat start times will be posted around the venue. Be sure to arrive at the pool 5-10 min before your heat starts. Feel free to warm up in the indoor pool. Note that the indoor pool is ~85ºF while the outdoor pool is ~80ºF.
New triathletes or AlbanyTri first-timers: review our FAQ before race day to get familiar with this race. Especially review our lap counting tips.
All athletes: remember to first and foremost have fun & be safe out there. On the bike course, shout “ON YOUR LEFT” when passing, and no passing on the right. The weather should be perfect this weekend. Wishing everyone a great race! 🙂

Triathlon Swimming Endurance Series

Between July through September at the Albany Aquatic Center there is a new coached workout happening on Sundays at 9:00-10:15 AM. This is a 13-week series designed for triathletes and open-water swimmers to improve swimming endurance, speed and form. First half of series focuses on endurance and second half on aerobic output, with a variety of technique work included throughout the series. Final session is 9/24 — the week before the Albany Community Triathlon!
The sets will regularly include distances of 300 to 500+ yards to help swimmers prepare for triathlons of a variety of lengths. Swimmer baseline times will be established and compared to goal times. Each work out will include a technique element. Heart rate will be used for feedback on level of effort for below and above aerobic threshold swims.
This series is coached by Lessly Field, a life-long swimmer and a certified Level 2 USMS coach whose focus is fun and providing tools for swimmers to achieve their goals. Free to quarterly/annual paying Albany Armada Masters Swimmers. Drop-in fee, $10 per session. Pay on deck. Swimmers must be registered with USMS for insurance liability ($45). Special guest coaches will make on deck appearances, including Coach Carol Nip, the 2017 Pac Masters Coach of the Year and others.
For more information, contact Coach Lessly at lesslyfield “at” sbcglobal.net.

Heat assignments for 2016: Posted
Heat assignments are now available for the Albany Community Tri taking place on Sunday 9/25. Please check either one of these listings to determine your heat number and start time before race day:
If you are a member of a relay team, only your team captain’s name will be listed. Super Youth will start at 11:00 am.
Aim to arrive at the Albany Aquatic Center at least 1 hour before your start time, possibly earlier if you need more time to prepare and to catch one of the pre-race announcements at 7:35am, repeated at 9:00am. Generally, if you are in heats 1-5, try to arrive to the venue around 7:00 am. If you are in a later heat, arrive around 8:00 am.
Pick up your race packet in advance at Road Runner Sports on Sat 9/24 between 12-4pm. Packet pickup will also be available on race day, though picking it up on Sat will ease congestion at the registration table.
Your race packet will contain a very important item: your timing chip — don’t forget to bring your timing chip with you on race day! Best to put it on your ankle when getting dressed first thing on Sunday morning.
There are other items in the packet you’ll need on race day as well, such as your security bracelets that will be labeled with your bib number and heat assignment. One goes on your wrist, the other goes on your bike frame — put those on as well. To be safe, bring your race packet with you on race day and volunteers will assist you putting things on.
The weather is looking great for race day. Here’s wishing everyone a fun & safe & energizing time at the 7th annual AlbanyTri! 🙂
Update 9/23/16 2:41pm: Heat assignment listings were updated to include relay team names, and one heat assignment fix.
Update 9/24/16 10:39pm: Included club affiliation column. Listing by NAME is now sorted by name globally, not per division. Listing by HEAT is secondarily sorted by NAME, not bib #.
Near sell-out, no race day registration
The AlbanyTri has had overwhelming interest this year and, for the first time in our 7-year history, we are nearly sold out before race day. Wow! Thanks to all participants (nearly 250 of you) and sponsors for your interest. Our beneficiary (Albany Athletics Boosters) really appreciates your contribution which will surely set a new record this year.
To make things go smoother on race day and ensure we can produce a quality event for all, we will NOT be accepting walk-in registrations on race day Sunday 9/25.
However, we will be accepting a small number of registrations at packet pickup on Saturday 9/24 at Road Runner Sports (12-4pm). There are 10 available slots for the main course (individual participants only, ages 9+). First come, first served.
Sorry if you missed out this year, but come out on race day to spectate, cheer, and possibly volunteer — a fine way to cap off Albany Local Week.
Pre-race packet pickup available!
Want to save time on race day? Come to Road Runner Sports on Saturday September 24 from 12 noon to 4 PM and you can pick up a packet containing all race day materials and swag bag and complete the waiver sign-in. This will allow you to avoid congestion at the registration table on race day and is strongly recommended for all registrants.
Bring a photo ID. At packet pickup, you can also confirm your swim heat assignment and ask questions about the course. At packet pickup, we’ll also be taking a limited number of registrations if you still need to sign up. There will be no race day registration this year.
If you can’t make it to packet pick up, consider sending a family member or friend to pick up your packet — just have them bring your ID or other proof of authorization.
Road Runner Sports is located at 1326 10th Street in Berkeley, near Office Depot and T Rex. And check out their selection of triathlon gear while you’re there. Our sponsors deserve your support!
